Triple Venn Diagram: I wanted to show how the three main states of matter and the phase changes are related. Using Publisher, I made a 3 panel brochure with a title flap, a flap with directions, and a Venn Diagram for the inside layout. The Venn diagram has circles/categories for solid, liquid, and gas. Remind students that when the circles overlap, it is something that both have in common. Where all 3 circles overlap, it is something that all 3 categories must have in common.
Using blue colored pencil, the students will fill in the phrases related to the states of matter and their characteristics, such as definite shape or volume. Using a red colored pencil, they can write in the phase changes, such as evaporation.
This would be a good SmartBoard/whole class activity and I am going to try to create a SmartBoard file once school starts. The Venn Diagram would be on the screen and each phrase would be listed on the side. Students could select one of the phrases and drag it to the correct place in the Venn diagram.
I plan to use this as a right hand activity since they are processing the information and seeing how the states of matter and phase changes are related.

Liz,
ReplyDeleteI'm enjoying learning through your plans for ISNs. You have encouraged me to do it as well. A couple of questions for you: 1-Will kids take them home daily and do the "reflection"-type activity daily too? and 2-Since you're doing labs in them too, about how many notebooks will kids use for you this year? 3-will you collect homework assignments separately from this, like a worksheet or something? and 4-are you grading them using a rubric?
Thanks for your info!
Thanks! To answer your questions, I plan to have the kids take home their notebooks only when an assignment needs to be completed, for example, if we did not finish the lab, they can leave their notebooks in the classroom.
ReplyDeleteI think I may use 3 notebooks this year, we have 50 page spirals that the school provides, I won't really know until I go through the school year. I plan on having most of the homework in the notebook and maybe some separate assignments that are more long term. Not sure about a rubric yet, have to think about that and how I want to set it up.
Have a great year!

Hello,
ReplyDeleteCan you explain the process for the INS. How do you get the students to put this notebook together, how do you use this INS with homework (my case the notebooks cannot leave the classroom) so how would homework affect the INS if they can't take it home? Please explain the INS as I am interested in adopting this for my classes. Thank you!
I plan on walking the students through the process and adding pages as we go along. If the students don't have homework, they can leave their notebooks in the classroom, but I do want them to take their notebooks home to complete lab write ups and homework assignments. Bringing the notebook to class will be part of their assignment grade and class participation. I am hoping that we get into the habit of bringing it to class everyday! We'll see how it goes once school starts!
